Ms Mfonobong Nelson, a graduate from University of Uyo was awarded winner of the BASF West Africa Young Female Pharmacist of the Year Award. In partnership with Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, BASF West Africa announced in 2018, plans to recognize young female pharmacist with hopes of raising awareness on gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The Managing Director of BASF, Dr Jean Marc Ricca stated that only 17 women have been awarded a Nobel prize in Chemistry, Physics or Medicine since 1903. He hopes award bodies such as this would interest more women in STEM.
The winning graduate was offered $1000 US dollars by the German company, BASF (Badische Anilin- & Sodafabrik) whose main ethos is creating chemistry through a sustainable future – operating in more than eighty countries and structured recently under six segments such as; Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care and Agricultural Solutions
