The rights group in Malaysia has hailed the Malaysia cabinet over the decision to abolish the death penalty as stated by Gobind Singh Deo a senior minister confirmed that the cabinet had resolved to end the death penalty.
Before now capital punishment in the country like Murder, drug trafficking, possession of firearms, kidnapping and other capital offences carries instant penalty which results to death by hanging, the law has been practised since the colonial rule of the British.
The senior minister told AFP saying that “I hope the law will be amended soon” He further said that The government decided to scrap capital punishment because there had been strong domestic opposition to the practice.
Surendran, an advisor with the Lawyers for Liberty rights group said in a statement. “The death penalty is barbarous and unimaginably cruel,” He said Once the death penalty is scrapped the country will have the moral authority to fight for fellow Malaysians facing death penalty abroad
