A baby white rhino was found near her dead mother, curled up and refusing to leave its mother who was killed by poachers at Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The heartfelt picture shows the newborn calf, who was also hurt by a machete in the brutal attack, clinging to his dead mother Rhino.
According to Metro, the mother rhino is the latest victim of poachers who kill rhinos for their horns and sell them for huge sums of money. The only reason the calf was spared was that the rhino was still too young to have developed the two horns.
When the park rangers found the injured calf beside his mother’s corpse, they removed the animal and took it to a nearby rhino orphanage.
The baby rhino, who has been given the name Arthur the Brave, has been at the orphanage for three months now.
The Metro quotes Cumbria Zoo Company’s chief executive Karen Brewer as saying,
“Arthur’s mother was snatched from him at an early age. Arthur still calls out for his mum and he will be emotionally scarred for a long time.”
