It’s true when they say: when the going gets tough, the Mentally tough get going. While people spend hours in the gym priming their bodies to take on the daily stresses life, feel and look good, most of us shy away or skip the more important aspect of honing and strengthening our minds to fight through the hurdles we face every day.
Our mental toughness is being constantly tested, whether it be to handle difficult people in our lives, taking tough decisions when it comes to making better choices or just surviving through some really rough days or rough patches in our lives.
These are 9 steps to consciously follow will help to develop your mental strength
1. They limit their interaction with people who drain their energies
It’s important to mentally prepare yourself to handle people who can frustrate, annoy and drain your energies. The key is not to let your emotions get the better of you when confronting a person who can disrupt your mental peace. Keep a rational tone when speaking to such people and try to tactfully handle them in a manner to ease their minds so that they don’t drain your energies.
2. They’re happy to adapt to change
The fear of change can be quite debilitating to your long-term success and can prevent you from attaining happiness as well. If you’re stuck it’s probably either because you still haven’t found that alternative that is out there or are afraid to embrace change itself. Ignoring the idea or the opportunity to accept change only leads to frustration because of the repeated failures doing the same things add up over time.
3. They confidently refrain from people, situations and demands that do more harm than good
Do you often find it difficult to say no? Chances are that you’re likelier to experience stress, depression, anxiety, poor health and mental burnouts, because of eventually the pressure of honouring all your commitments is bound to add up. Building the confidence to say no is one of the healthiest ways to avoid such a circumstance. Saying no, when needed, not only gives you enough time to complete commitments you have already taken up, it also helps you complete the tasks at hand with satisfaction.
4 They don’t let their emotions override logic
While it’s completely natural for your emotion to surface at any given point in time, it’s important to keep your emotions in check by creating a healthy boundary beyond which you should let your logic mind take over. The idea is to create a healthy balance between your emotional and logical thinking to make more realistic decisions that are beneficial to you.
5. They take a step back to introspect during a tough situation instead of complaining about it
Instead of complaining about a difficult situation assessing the problem at hand to find a solution also has an immediate effect in calming your mind down, instead of letting the situation build stress and be anxiety. Complaining about a situation only clouds your thought process even more because of the chaos it generates and doesn’t allow you to think clearly about how to handle the situation at hand.
6. They focus on their goals more than their thoughts
Since negative thoughts are a part of our existence, it makes sense to take our focus away from such thoughts when they come to mind and refocus them on long/short term goals we aspire to achieve. This helps us generate inner dialogue that helps keep us positive and motivated by overshadowing the negative chatter in our minds.
7. They don’t shy away from challenging times or situations
Embracing tough situations, instead of avoiding them, as long as it gets you closer to your goals helps you accept pain as a part of your personal growth. The discomfort that accompanies periods of struggle helps you become mentally stronger and capable of handling similar situations in the future with far more ease. This process also helps identify areas of weakness to work on.
8. They practice the art of persevering patiently
People who are mentally strong are fully aware that patience is a virtue. They know that some of the best things in life take their own sweet time to materialise. Building both patience and perseverance is a practice that needs to build over time. As you grow in this aspect, everything you want seems to materialise over time.
9. They prioritise what they believe in
Being mentally tough takes courage as it may sometimes mean that you may have to go against popular belief because they don’t sync with your beliefs. Standing by your own beliefs even when it is out of favour with the masses, not only increases your mental strength but it also required for success in the long-term.
